5.0 out of 5 stars A Backup Device for Today's Needs, Provides Security and Peace of Mind for < $100
Seagate thought of the needs of today's user whose information may reside more in virtual cloud storage than on a local hard drive. Managing this could be a nightmare, if not for a product like Seagate, that makes easy work of backing up your photos and videos on Facebook, YouTube and other web-based sites.
If you're not backing up your computer and other devices regularly, think of what you'd be in for should you lose your photos, videos, music, financial information, favorite sites and all the customized settings you've saved. Investing in a simple product, such as the Seagate Backup Plus, is a must.
There are two flavors of the Seagate Backup Plus, one for devices using the Windows operating system, and one for Mac. There are also several color choices.
The Backup Plus is about the size of a wallet, yet it contains a generous 1 TB of storage, allowing the user ample space to add hungry files, like video and music. You can even store several backup versions at once.
Backup your computer, other devices and Cloud data using the USB cable (attach the converter that came with your phone or tablet), or choose Firewire or Thunderbolt and speed up the task. Wired backups are more secure than wireless, and recommended for that reason.
Your device already contains the appropriate software, "Time Machine", to make the Backup Plus work, so you don't need to do anything but plug the unit in and set your options using that software. This is a sensible design option, since cluttering up my systems with redundant apps or software is not something I like to do unless there is a good reason. Plus, this ensures that all of your software support comes from Apple. I find Time Machine a little clumsy but fairly simple to understand after consulting the instructions available in online help.
Social Media users also have the option to install the "Seagate Dashboard", that makes managing photos and video easy, and ensures they're backed up onto your drive. Tutorial videos also load with the software, and more information is available at the Seagate website.
The first backup will take a while and is best done at a time when you can leave it alone to do the job. When backing up a lot of information, be sure your system's options are set to keep it from shutting down to conserve energy, or else you'll find yourself having to do that first backup a few times before it is complete.
You can choose to encrypt the data on your Backup Plus. Password protection is managed through your Mac.
After you successfully perform your first full backup, the system takes it from there, automatically backing up just your changes on with a frequency that you determine.
For extra security, the Backup Plus' portability makes keeping your backup off-site easy with a unit that is small enough to fit in a safe deposit box or another secure place. At less than $100, purchasing a second drive is within reach of many budgets.
Alternatively, you can backup your data to the free Cloud storage available from Seagate for the first year. After that, you can subscribe to keep using the Cloud.
These options may seem inconvenient and even overkill, but consider what people say when tragedy strikes. They all seem to mention with great sadness the loss of keepsakes and mementos, especially photographs.
The Backup Plus comes packaged with a USB cable, instructions, and software. It is lightweight, and takes up very little space on your desk.
Windows/PC users should purchase the Seagate Backup Plus for Windows.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2014This works great to back up your Mac. The drive is small enough to fit in a pocket, put in a safe deposit box for offsite storage, or hide somewhere in your house. This has lasted so far, unlike two other brands I have used that didn't last long. Its cheaper than storing large amounts of data in the cloud (which makes me nervous not having that data myself).
Capacity 1TB is plenty unless you have a lot of video or billions of high quality photos stored on your computer hard drive. Check your computer's hard drive to see how much storage you need to back up your important files. (How much storage have used in addition to the original amount used by the operating system and applications?) I did have a computer hard drive die on me at work, and another die slowly at home, so don't assume you can't lose everything stored on your computer! Back up regularly, or use the automatic Time Machine backup application on your Mac with an external hard drive like this one.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2013Just like two other reviews (James and Kayla) I found the software not appropriate for Mac. The "Protect" software is PC-only although curiously shipped on the MacOS Journaled partition. (Seagate? Are you listening?)
But I bought this because I wanted to use it with Apple's built-in TimeMachine utility, which probably what you want it for too. It does work with TimeMachine and it does that well. Plug it in and TimeMachine asks you if you want to use your new drive. That's it: plug it in and click 'yes'.
However, I partitioned my drive into three: one for TimeMachine, one for Lightroom backups, and another for random files. I did this with OSX's built-in DiskUtility.
If you are design geek, you'll be happy to know that that brushed aluminum is a perfect match for the iMac and MacBooks (Pros and Airs included). The white panels perfectly match the old MacBooks and MightyMouse.
My suggestion to Seagate is to deemphasize the packaged software. It frankly sucks and sets up an expectation that falls short. Calling it "Backup Plus for Mac" doesn't help. Focus on great hardware, which is where your competition falls short IMO. And call it something different, maybe "Space for TimeMachine".
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2015I've used this drive for 2 years now, and while it is usually functional, there is a flimsy connection between the drive and the connecting cord that causes the drive to eject easily. Even if I carefully pick up the drive while it is running, it will immediately disconnect. I also had a couple of scares in which I thought the drive had died on me, and despite being fairly tech savvy, I needed an intervention from someone in the IT department at work. He was surprised when he managed to revive it.
Presently, when I connect the drive to my computer for a TimeMachine (Mac specific) back up, it will no longer back up my computer. It simply loops at the "preparation for back up" stage, and doesn't go further. There is over 500GB of memory left on the drive, so it's not an issue of space.
I'm actually on amazon right now, looking for another external to purchase before something goes irreversibly wrong with this one, and I lose all my data. Though I have managed to use it for it's ultimate purpose of backing up my computer, I don't see myself purchasing this particular item again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plug and play
Plugged it in to the USB port on my 2012 iMac 27", opened the Timemachine settings and listed this Seagate as the backup and it's done.
I leave it plugged in to the Mac as it is tiny and doesn't get in the way.
There is a tiny LED that lights up on the Seagate to let you know it's working.
Overall a great little HD that takes the worry out of the "what-ifs"

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice quality
This was super easy, plug and play. My Mac recognized it right away, installed drivers and I was ready to go.
The HD looks nice, blends well with my iMac and the quality is noticeable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very easy to use
I use it with a MacBook Air. Just plugged it in and followed the set up. Easy, quick and works.
